Broadfork Farm is the life and work of Kelli Tennyson, Tim Sutton and their six children. Kelli's family history has deep agricultural roots with great-grandparents immigrating from Sweden to start their farms in Minnesota. And grandparents who continued those farming traditions with farms of their own. Her grandfather Hjalmar August Hilgren, in particular, is the inspiration behind Broadfork Farm. He farmed organically and sustainably, long before those words were even common place, running a successful diversified farm with vegetables, grains, livestock, milk and eggs.
Today, Kelli along with her partner Tim and their six children are following a similar path. Incorporating livestock in their field rotations, utilizing on-farm nutrients, rotating crops and using only organic, ecologically friendly farming practices. Their farm, while smaller in size than that of her grandfather's, fits her ecological and sustainable farming goals. Providing woodlands and native prairie borders for wildlife and beneficial insects. Pastures for pigs, sheep, chickens and ducks. And a small orchard for fruit trees and tillable land for vegetables.
